#48 Dining in Korea #1

Eating in Korea can be a headache at times.
Especially so, if you can't read korean.
At times like this, I'm forever grateful to have attended basic korean lessons at NTU.
Finding a place to eat during our first week with C's family was difficult, as his mom's a vegeterian.
So places that we dine at must has food for vegeterian and carnivorous humans like us (⌒_⌒;)

Throughout the first week when travelling with C's family, the sentences that I use at every meal will be
"Is this vegeterian?"
or
"Is there meat in this? Can you remove it?"
Learn it here: http://www.sweetandtastytv.com/blog/korean-phrases-for-vegetarians-and-vegans
Somehow, it seems that they don't really understand the expression 채식 음식(vegeterian food)?
Whenever I ask for it, they will be giving a puzzled look, or take some time to understand?

Now, going on to the restaurants that we went in Korea.

Gogung(古宫)
This was our first meal after reaching Seoul. We were't very hungry since we had breakfast at the airport just about 2 hours ago.
We ordered a meal for 2 and an additional Jeonju Bibimbap to share.
However, this came with heavy negotiation with the restaurant who wanted us to order a 5 person share before we were allowed what we intended to order.
This is when we realized Seoul is not exactly friendly to sharing food,
Strictly 1 person to a serving.

Gogung is apparently known for traditional Jeonju Bibimbao
But I don't remember it tasting any different from the bibimbap that you can taste anywhere on the streets.
The Jeonju Bibimbap doesn't contain any meat, so it's suitable for vegeterians.

Can't remember the name for this, but it tasted like bulgogi with mushrooms.
Came with the set for 2 person.

Jeonju Bibimbap

Banchan (Side dishes)
Mostly suitable for vegeterians.
Makgeolli (Rice Wine) pictured at the back which came with the set.

Bibigo
There's Bibigo in SG too, but we've never tried it!
We went to the branch at Gangnam!
It just happened that when we were there, they were having this special menu that has food for vegeterians!(ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚✧
But sadly, I have no photos of it...
After deciding on what you want, proceed to the cashier and place your order.
Carry your tray with the side dishes back.
The staff will deliver the food to you.
Prices were resonable!
8000W for a Yukgaejang (Spicy Beef Soup)!
According to C, the meat was never-ending.(‐^▽^‐)

Tosokchon
It took us quite awhile to find this place cause we took a wrong turn after exiting.
It's actually pretty simple, but I can't give any directions because I'm bad at it. Sobz ●︿●
I believe you can find it online or get the address and Google Maps it!
Tosokchon is the famous place to have Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken)!
Read online that their standards have been dropping, but if you have never tried ginseng chicken before, it's best to try somewhere known!

This was their menu.
Poor C mama could only ask for seafood pancake without seafood.
But the pancake was hugeeeeeee!
So it's definitely worth the price you're paying!

Ginseng Chicken, 15 000W

We were pondering if rice was included, or we had to order it until C's father told us that there's glutinous rice in the chicken!
The soup was light, so definitely suitable for brunch on an empty stomach.
Ginseng taste wasn't that strong, so if you hate ginseng like me, no worries about it.
The larger cup serves tea.
The smaller cup is for the Ginseng Essence.
It was sooooooooooooo bitter!
I ended up passing it to C mama after 1 try hehe.

We arrived somewhere before 11am and there was no queue.
Shortly after we ordered, the room started filling up very quickly and was full in no time!
However, there are many rooms available in Tosokchon, so they can sit many customers at a time.
Even when we left, there still wasn't any queue!

Yoogane
Now that there's Yoogane in SG, I guess everyone knows what they sell!
Basically you order sets of what you want, and they will stir-fry it for you!
Yoogane is famous for 닭갈비(Dakgalbi), which is essentially diced chicken in chilli pepper paste.
But if you must have seafood for your meal, they have seafood sets too!

We ordered the dakgalbi set, forgot how much it was but relatively cheap compared to SG prices!
This was 4 servings!
And the waiters/waitress will help you to cook and fry them!
We ate at the branch in Myeongdong and they are relatively used to having foreigners, so it's alright even if you don't know korean!

We added on ramen instead of rice and it was goooooooood!
You have the choice of normal rice/fried rice too!
The only difference of fried rice is that they will help you to stir-fry it with your remaining sauce, chicken & vegetables at the end!

And if you're wondering what's there for vegeterians....
Other than the stir-frying sections, Yoogane also serves noodles!
Most of korea's cold noodles do not contain any meat.
So for Mama C, we actually ordered cold noodles for her!
It was 9000W and an extremely big bowl!

Myeongdong Kyoja
This place has been recommended by many people on the internet, that's how I got to know!
They are famous for their dumplings, so that's all that everyone eats!
If you're there, you will see the same thing on everyone's table.
The legendary noodles and steamed mandu!
That bowl of noodles is a huge serving!
I had a hard time trying to finish it even though I'm a die-hard fan supporter of noodles!
Even C didn't manage to finish it!
And I thought the mandu were just normal so you can actually skip it.
Just the noodles will do.

The mandu & dumpling contains meat so none of them for Mama C ):
I was hoping they would have some with chives stuffings instead so Mama C could try too, but nopezzzzzzz.
One bad thing of dining in Korea is they're too unflexible with their food!
ASking if they can remove 1 ingredient from their food normally results in rejection ):

So for Mama C, she had cold noodles again ):
But at least it was of soy base and the noodles were green!
We're guessing it's made from spinach!

Parking in Plate
This place was made famous by 1 of the couples of "We got Married"
Maybe because we went there in the afternoon, the food was alright, but the ambience wasn't that good.
This was some pizza fondue, recommended on the menu.
If you are there, this is something you must order!
There's bacon, corn and cheese on the pizza and you make it even mroe cheesy by dipping it into the cheese fondue!
It was perfect for cheese lovers!
Love the addition of corn too, a different crunch from the pizzas in SG.
Can't really remember what pizza is this? Pepperoni?? (*´艸`*)
The special thing about this pizza is that you don't use your hands!
You eat it using your spoon to scoop the pizza!
I like this concept, makes eating pizza fuss-free!

Ordered this Salad Pasta for Mama C!
I've always doubt how good salads can be but this was daebak!
The veggies were fresh and the sauce made them refreshing in the summer heat!
For the first time in my life, I actually feel ordering salad wasn't a waste of money!

Dining in Korea with a Vegeterian is not easy.
1) You will always have to check with the restaurant if there's food that does not contain meat.
It will be hard if you don't know korean, so try to learn some phrases.
2)And then if there isn't, most of the time, they won't agree to remove the meat from the dish.
So it's actually useless to ask, but I still try, hoping it will make a difference hahaha.
3)Then again, if there's food for a vegeterian, it's normally cold noodles or bibimbap, so there's very limited choices. If you go to cafes, there's cake and salads though.

If you are looking for traditional vegeterian food there's quite a bit of them actually.
We intended to visit one on our visit to Insadong.
It's called "Baru Gongyang"
But it was closed by the time we reached ):
Read reviews online that it was good, it was sad that Mama C couldn't try it.
I'm sure she would have enjoyed it though!

And so this is for the first part of dining in Korea with C family :)

#40

First photo after exams! Right outside the exam venue with the worst paper of the sem. But this also concludes the end of Year3 in NTU!!! GOODBYEEEEEEEEEEEE will be back in year 4 (: So excited about not having to study for 4 months.
First meal after liberation at Paradise Dynasty! I can eat ramen everyday omg.

So happy to finally see a christmas tree even though it's so pathetic cause it's so tiny hahahahaha! Ah my holidays still have yet to sink in that you're finally here!

Get yourself a bf who loves soccer so much that you have to be prepared to spend 90% of dates at sports store looking at soccer boots until you can even know what are the lastest design and colours. Interested parties please do contact me for free boots consultation with Mr C. Advice guaranteed with his materials science knowledge and passion for soccer!!!

Day 2 celebration after fixing my phone (which died after 2 days ohgosh thankfully for warranty, gotta fix it again on tuesday and they better not make me pay any more money >:( ) with hotspot fried fish maggie tomyum and llaollao!!! Hotspot's tomyum is so saturated with tomyum taste I think it's fitting to call it tomyum stew instead hahahah. The maggie is different also, it's QQ okay like korean ramen just that it's thinner! And llao llao is the best choice to bring down the heat!
Please always choose Rafaello sauce instead of chocolate/caramel/any others because Rafaello is what makes it worth the hype! Same goes for caramelized cooki for crunch and mango! We are gonna come up with a perfect combination 1 day!

Day 3 with church followed by Nam Nam and Andersen's Sundae by the fountain hehehe
Still can't express how happy I am that exams have ended, waited so long for this period to come where we don't have to worry about going home to late and having to get a study table. December has to be fulfilling before IA and it's back to same ol' work routine. Not quite sure how I will adapt to the life of an engineer though :/

#39 Tai Hwa Bak Chor Mee

If one day you're at the ICA and you happen to feel hungry, no worries for there's a really famous Bak Chor Mee just 5 minutes away!
From the ICA, walk towards the canal and look for block 446, that's where is stall is located at!

Tai Hwa Bak Chor Mee
Block 466 Crawford Lane
#01-12 Singapore 190465

Do yourself a favour and do AVOID peak hours!
We went after collecting my passport at about 12.30pm on a Saturday.
A very bad decision made.
C had to queue for more than an hour before we finally got to eat this bak chor mee.
C said it's because the stall owner is the only one cooking and he takes his time to prepare every dish. Probably to upkeep his reputation as one of the best in Singapore.

Noodles were good. Aren't soggy and doesn't have the flour aftertaste.
Sauce makes you want more of it, probably due to the amount of black vinegar added.
Flatfish was used to substitute pork lard.
Pork liver was excellent, done just right.
And the soup is also a highlight, full of flavorful with a dense meat cloud that you can't even see the bottom of the bowl.

C said it was rated by Makansutra as a die die must try dish.
Well... I do agree to a certain extent.
It is definitely one of the best Bak Chor Mee I have tasted till date. But, however nice a Bak Chor Mee is, will never make me want to sacrifice 1 hour of my life to queue for 20 minutes of enjoyment.
Will go back for it, but only at non-peak periods.

Just commemorating that I survived my worst hell week in NTU out of the 5 sems that I've been here.
3 tests, 2 assignments, 2 lab reports.
Thankful for ending Saturday with a good date and enjoyable service.
(They sang all my favorite songs :D)

2 more weeks to end of Year3 Sem1!

And Jesus, replying, said to them, Have faith in God [constantly].

Truly I tell you, whoever says to this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea! and does not doubt at all in his heart but believes that what he says will take place, it will be done for him.

For this reason I am telling you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe (trust and be confident) that it is granted to you, and you will [get it].

#37 If I Die Young

I like how google compiles burst shots into a gif, such a sweetie :3
Wedding dinner of oldest cousin 2 weeks ago. Photos with ma couzzies instead of the main stars of the day hahahha.
It's weird how aunties & uncles come along and ask "when is it gonna be your turn?" Like hello guyssssss, just legal this year and halfway through uni so I guess not anytime soon??? Hahaha, you can start saving your angbaos though ( ⋂‿⋂’)
Every Monday's food court Thai food yumz Ah Loy Thai, I'm so happy that you're at Jurong Point!
Pandan chicken and butter calamari are their best selling dishes. But tried out garlic pork since we are sick of the two already. It's rather good! Crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside with a hint of garlic taste!

Hell week the upcoming weeks, sincerely praying I manage everything well.
3011 CA, korean essay submission, 3014 CA, korean quiz, 3015 technical report and business plan submission......
And the following week just needs to have 3012 CA and 3015 presentation on the ssme day, wtf please profs????
Time management is everything for the next 2 weeks! Can't wait to be done with uni, but I think of FYP in Y4 and I'm not exactly ready nor excited for it pshhhhhhhh
Just in case, I don't manage to survive(~_~;) (actually just testing out a new app lawlz)

#29

Hopped over to Johor Premium Outlet on our 18 months for C to buy his sports shoes. Probably his new found heaven. Lunch and a cuppa flat white before we started shopping. Didn't manage to get anything and stores seems rather empty. December will be a much better time to go with all the year end and Christmas sales. There were more stocks on sale too.

From the Malaysia customs, follow the crowd down 2 flights of escalator. Upon passing by a desk where the police are stationed at, walk straight abit more and turn left to take the escalator down to the bus interchange. You should see a lift on your right and Starbucks a little bit down the road. Head to the furthest end of the interchange and take JPO1 which will bring you to the premium outlet, the bus comes and certain timings only and they're rather punctual so try to reach early. Journey took roughly 1 hour with 55 minutes being the minimum.

And then we sent off 2 of our tops. All these people going on exchange making me jelly~

Pastel & Brit (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤

Random 5.30am adhoc job

Hall warming. Weird how there's so many people over at Hall 9.

From day 0 of year 3 sem 1 until the first friday. From new LTs (which I hate) to catching up with my favorite lab buddies. Blessed is being able to meet new people who click well with you. And finally ending the week at 2D1N sojubang korean bbq yumzzzzzz (=^-ω-^=) Not forgetting I had hotspot tomyum and llao llao yoghurt with C before them. #vroomvroomyumyumdays (:

Finally got a job after what seems like forever, and it has already been a month. Just praying they will recontract me cause I hate finding jobs though it's high possibility that they wouldn't because boss will be back from MC and there's no need for a temp anymore (╯︵╰,)

But first back to life without a job yet. (=^-ω-^=)

Seniors Camp Day 1 & 2! Sapped the energy out of me, I'm too old to manage camps (︶︹︺)

Met Crystal after the first day of work for dinner. 320 below is definitely worth the fats. SOOOOOOOOO CREAMY AND SOFT TOO GOOD YUMZ (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧

Jobweek again. But at least it was one of the better ones that we managed to earn quite a fair bit.

Bye to Florence going on her OCIP and welcome back to sg Huishan!

Don't want to work but still wanna work do you get this conflicting feeling pshhhhhhh (ノ-_-)ノ ~┻━┻
